Solar Power. Too much of a good thing? Never. (Well as long as it isn’t over 125% of your total energy needs then it is great for you in Arizona!) More on that in a minute.

Arizona has excellent net metering policies in effect all over the state. Net metering allows you to get credit from your utility company when your solar energy production exceeds your usage. Let’s say it is another beautiful, sunshine filled day in the Valley and your PV system generates way more power than your home or business could possibly consume in one afternoon. Well, with net metering you can get credit for the over production of energy and essentially use the credit from the stored energy for power when it isn’t so sunny or at night.

Depending on you local utility supplier, your meter spin backwards when you produce more energy than you are using. Another method to monitor consumption and production after your PV system is installed is for your utility company to come out and install another little meter next to your current one. One meter measures energy in and the other energy out. When your meter gets read, the reader notes not only how much you used, but how much clean energy your system created! Each utility has developed its own way of crediting your account for over production and stored usage.

Net metering benefits are maxed out at 125% of the total power your home or business uses in a given time period. You will not get credit for any power generated over 125% of your usage so you can not act as the neighborhood utility company. So while you won’t gain financially by producing too much, how can too much clean energy be a bad thing? It’s not, but perhaps you didn’t need to invest in as many solar panels as you bought though.

In summary, Arizona has generous and fair net metering policies. APS and SRP differ slightly in their policies because SRP, as well as, some municipalities are not subject to the same state laws as APS. You can visit APS to learn more or follow the link our favorite site for all up to date solar rules and regulations, DSIRE.

You’ve heard all of the buzz about federal stimulus plans; particularly a lot of information about renewable energy systems, but you are wondering what that means as far as affordability and practicality for your commercial property? Well, wonder no more. Whether you want to start with putting solar panels on your covered parking lot structures or install a large system on your building’s rooftop, Arizona Energy Masters can guide you through the maze of rebates, incentives and accounting procedures that will to make your renewable energy aspirations a reality for your commercial property. At last, going green will truly save your company some green faster than ever before.

In addition to generous utility rebates, there are several federal and state tax incentives that make a solar investment affordable and attainable. Businesses can employ the Modified Accelerated Cost Recovery System (MACRS) to accelerate the depreciation of their PV system over 5 years. This is especially attractive to businesses because PV systems have true useful life span of 20 – 25 years. Under MACRS businesses can essentially shorten the useful life of their capital investment in a PV system for tax purposes over a 5 year time period.

The MACRS was amended by the federal stimulus legislation passed in February 2009, aka The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, to include a 50% bonus depreciation provision for eligible renewable-energy systems acquired and placed in service in until the entire 2009 tax year. The are several qualifications for the generous bonus depreciation. To learn more about this extra depreciation bonus please visit the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency.

While the headlines of our newspapers tell us everyday that federal stimulus funds have not been doled out as anticipated, it is simply not the case when it comes to businesses that install a solar. Solar energy is must for the future of our state. Call us today to see how we cost effective it is to install PV for your property.
